McClure said his church has helped him understand gay and lesbian couples shouldn’t be excluded from the pool of prospective foster parents. He has watched same-sex couples in the congregation excel at raising children. Through conversations with gay members, he has learned to empathize with the challenges of being gay.
“To say we’re secular and not faith-based is correct. At the same time, a lot of social workers draw on faith to get their job done,” he said. “I don’t know that it’s exactly God’s work. But I think he would approve.”
